While practicing Reproductive Endocrinology in Charleston South Carolina, an experienced Reproductive Endocrinologist, Dr. John Schnorr, identified patient and clinic challenges associated with monitoring egg production in patients undergoing fertility treatment. Egg production is monitored by using an ultrasound placed in the vagina to measure collections of fluid in the ovary called follicles. The number and sizes of the follicles tell the physicians the number and quality of the eggs.

“I think one of the biggest challenges is that each physician and ultrasonographer measures follicles in a slightly different way resulting in inconsistency from ultrasonographer to ultrasonographer. No person is right or wrong, the measurements are simply inconsistent. The second challenge is that high-quality ultrasounds measuring each of the follicles often takes 10 to 15 minutes and the process is uncomfortable for patients.” says Dr. Schnorr.

To help solve this problem, Dr. Schnorr founded Cycle Clarity in 2019. MyCycleClarity, powered by Follicle Clarity, uses the many advantages of artificial intelligence and machine learning to give physicians a second set of eyes to help identify and measure each of the follicles within the ovary. Cycle Clarity’s FDA cleared software, Follicle Clarity, was developed through a laborious annotation effort involving the study of 19,776 ovaries in which 91,782 follicles were identified and annotated. This has resulted in software that can read ultrasound images and measure each of the follicles within an ovary. The software platform, MyCycleClarity, is now available to help physicians around the country monitor the 9 million patients who undergo infertility treatment annually in the United States.

The benefit of MyCycleClarity is the consistent measurement of follicles from ultrasonographer to ultrasonographer helping to standardize the follicular measurements and outcome. Harnessing the power of computing, artificial intelligence can also perform the measurements much faster than the typical human
measurements with complete measurements performed in only 10 seconds per ovary which is a significant time saving for the patient and fertility clinic. With the MyCycleClarity software, the entire monitoring ultrasound takes less than 1 minute.

We are a team of physicians, embryologists, computer engineers, data scientists, ultrasonographers, image annotators and biostatisticians dedicated to improving the world of fertility treatment through the application of cognitive computing in healthcare.

Together, we can advance fertility care.
